Complete High Speed Access Solutions For The Small Office.
How is it better than the competition? There are
no alternative products that bring comparable advantages
of economics and ease of use to a small office wishing
to connect over a VPN. Alternatives include:
- Traditional ISDN or Frame Relay routers with either
PPTP or L2PT VPNs. These products require a range of static IP addresses
and are more expensive than a
Web Ramp M3 plus they incur monthly ISP costs that are hundreds o dollars more
than a M3 plus IP Tunneling Kit. Proprietary VPN routers like EtherExpress Router
from Intel and L2F running on Cisco routers. These Frame Relay solutions cost
over $500 a month in service fees.
- Software server solutions like Aventail or SmartGate. These server solutions
are not designed for small offices and range in price from $5,000-$10,000.
What is needed to use the IP Tunneling Support
Kit in addition to the Web Ramp M3 or M3t, PCs on the local LAN need either Dial-Up
Networking for Microsoft
Windows 95 Version 1.2. (Downloadable for free) or Windows NT Workstation version
4.0 (ships with PPTP client software). The central site will need NT RAS with
the latest Service Pack.
"JASKE.COM has been a RampExpert
since 1997. We have integrated this product into other offerings to provide
clients
with flexible
alternatives
to high cost routers and dedicated leased lines. Ramp Networks has developed
a package customized to work with law firms. This legal initiative brings the
cutting edge benefits of the Internet to smaller organizations without the
need for dedicated staff to manage the service. We feel that the this product
and in specific the legal initiative blends well with our other services to
provide our clients with a bundled offering that is hard to match."
Customer Example
The American Heart Association was founded in 1924 and is the oldest and largest
national non-profit voluntary health association dedicated to reducing disability
and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The AHA is a community-based
organization with about 2,100 state and metropolitan affiliates, divisions
and branches throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico. AHA affiliates range in size
from very small 2 person offices to medium-sized regional centers. They all
share a need to communicate donor information to the Dallas HQ as well as obtain
information on AHA programs and priorities through e-mail and shared files.
AHA initiated a project to integrate their affiliates and offices over a Wide
Area Network. Their goals were to provide a solution that was effective, affordable
and economical for both small as well as large offices.
Their final architecture was based around a Virtual Private Network using Microsoft
PPTP. Using a VPN allows AHA to minimize cost by carrying their data over the
Internet and to ensure security of donors and clinical research. AHA defined
three solutions within their architecture. For a single-user office, Microsoft
Windows with a modem and dial-up line is the most affordable option. For small
offices with multiple people needing simultaneous access, AHA selected the
Web Ramp M3t with the IP Tunneling Kit. Most offices will use two modems attached
to the M3t. Large offices will use a Frame Relay connection with a traditional
router. The Web Ramp M3 is an analog router with a built-in hub that allows
up to three external modems to be connected to the Internet. Through special
software, users can browse a web page using all multiple modems simultaneously.
The addition of PPTP support allows AHA offices to connect to their corporate
office for the price of a local phone call and a low cost dial-up ISP charge.
Multiple users can create tunnels via one modem at a time. The Web Ramp includes
load-balancing software that places the incremental connections on the least
loaded modem to maximize bandwidth.
In addition to saving costs, AHA selected the Web Ramp M3t for the following
reasons: Provides a multi-user solution throughout the U.S. where other WAN
services may not be available. The Web Ramp M3t comes with a single browser
interface that allows for easy configuration. The Web Ramp M3t has a built-in
DHCP server that speeds and simplifies LAN set-up. The Web Ramp M3t is easily
upgradable over the Internet. The Web Ramp M3t allows remote users to dial
into the LAN and use the Internet connection or share local files. This allows
users
to work from home without the added cost of a home based ISP account. Plus
an office can use the same product and data lines for both incoming and outgoing
calls – thereby further saving money.
