version of an identity document or passport, and strong cryptography. The company
issues three kinds of certificates:
- Server certificates, which authenticate the identity of companies and web servers.
- Developer certificates, which identify the source of software distributed over

The Netcraft Secure Server Survey [ Netcraft ] examines the use of encrypted
transactions on the Web through extensive automated exploration of the Internet.
Netcraft conducts its survey every month, to provide empirical information about
the state of Internet Electronic Commerce. The Netcraft Survey analyzes the Internet
sites supporting encrypted transactions. It breaks that formation down by identity,
geographical location, legal jurisdiction, certificate authority issuing the
certificates, expiry of the certificates, and the type and relative strength
of encryption the sites can support. The survey has identified a clear growth
trend in Thawte's world market share over the past few months.
