How Miva Works

The Miva Engine uses a preprocessor for HTML documents that interprets HTML and Miva tags. It reads the document and looks for tags that it knows about -- all other tags and text are output as they are found. This is similar in concept to the way that a browser "ignores" tags that it doesn't know about. Because Miva is web server and browser independent, you can freely mix HTML, Javascript, Miva Tags, VBScript, etc. in a Miva document. You can even create HTML code on-the-fly!

Integrated Database

A high performance, architecture neutral, multi-user database system is integrated with the Miva Engine. Database files can be copied and used across platforms without any conversion or time consuming data unload/load procedures. This makes the Miva Engine an ideal system for Hosting Services and sites that have different architectures for development, maintenance, and publishing. The database system uses an xBase core file system that is wrapped with the high performance Miva Database Indexing System (MDIX).

Functions
Miva is a function oriented scripting language. User Defined Functions (UDF's) can be created using the MvFUNCTION tag. UDF's can contain any valid HTML, htmlscript, javascript, text, or Miva code and can be called from anywhere in a Miva enabled active document. In addition to UDF's, Miva has several pre-defined functions which fall into four categories: file system, time & date, math, and strings.

E-commerce

The Miva Commerce System (MCS) is a simple-to-use and generalized interface to execute transactions with commerce providers for tasks such as credit card processing, sales tax lookup, export controls, product fulfillment, and other services. MCS uses a METAMETHOD to determine which commerce processing sub-system should be used to conduct a secured server to server transaction. Htmlscript has partnered with CyberSource to implement their SCMP commerce protocol as the first METAMETHOD to use Miva MCS services. The CyberSource suite of services is ideal for webmasters who build digital products.

Variable Scope

Miva builds on htmlscript "typeless" variables and adds in the new concept of variable scope. The scope of a Miva variable can be local, global, database, or system and is used to automatically delete the variable when it is no longer needed. For example, a database variable is automatically deleted when the database is closed. When Miva runs a pure htmlscript 2.x or 1.x active document it defaults all variables to the global scope.

Syntax
A new set of Miva tags implement all of the standard htmlscript features plus the new Miva features. Developers can freely intermix the new Miva tags and htmlscript tags. Miva is completely htmlscript compatible and can run htmlscript active documents faster than v2.x. All Miva tags can be used with XML syntax which provides a high level of compatibility with many HTML editors. Developers maintain their investment in htmlscript code while being able to take advantage of all of the new Miva functionality. Htmlscript Corp. has demonstrated its ability to maintain a superb backward compatible pathway since the very first version of htmlscript in 1995.
